How to Reboot Google Pixel Recovery Mode

Google Pixel devices

The Pixel is the latest Android-pure based smartphone introduced by Google. So, all your favorite apps, features and capabilities will be pre-loaded on your new device. That means you can use the classic tweaking procedures on your Google Pixel too, but not before learning the basics. I am talking about essential operations such as rebooting into recovery, making a hard reset, or entering bootloader mode. Well during this particular step by step guide I decided to show you how to reboot your Google Pixel into recovery mode.

The recovery environment is there by default – you can anytime boot your Pixel into this mode. But by default the stock recovery image can be used only for applying supported or official operations – like managing OTAs, making a hard reset or clearing app data cache. But, if you are an experienced user you will most likely choose to replace the stock recovery with a custom software such as CWM or TWRP recovery – by using a custom recovery you can apply various custom operations in order to tweak your Google Pixel.

What interest us are the methods in which the stock or the custom recovery menu can be booted on your device. Well, in that respect, the steps which are being detailed below are compatible with both: the stock and the custom recovery platforms.

Now, since through the recovery mode menu you can access and also modify the built-in Android system your OEM added a security measure: thus, the recovery mode is hidden by default and can be reached only if you know how to perform a dedicated reboot sequence. This reboot sequence can be performed in different ways, which are all explained in this step by step guide – of course, the lines from this guide are compatible only with the Google Pixel, so try not to mess things up.

Reaching recovery is an official process so you aren’t risking anything. However, applying unofficial procedures by using the recovery mode comes with a set of risks as it implies in completing unofficial operations – so in that particular situation you might end up in losing your Google Pixel warranty. So, choose wisely what you apply on your smartphone and always use trustful tutorials and tested third party apps and software – otherwise you can easily end up in soft bricking your Android powered handset.

A backup isn’t required if you are going to keep everything official. But, if you are planning to tweak your Google Pixel, before accessing the recovery mode menu you should save your personal data, info, accounts and files. The backup should only take you a couple of minutes as you can easily sync your files with your account, or you can use all sort of other similar cloud storage services.

What you must do is a checking process for ensuring that your Pixel has enough battery left – there should be at least 50% power left on your phone. Otherwise you have to charge your smartphone before doing anything else. If you don’t charge your handset it might get turned off while you use the recovery mode menu and if that happens some problems might be issued within the Android core system.

How to Reboot Google Pixel Recovery Mode

Method 1

The hardwarekeys will be used on this first recovery method. Here is what you need to do:

  1. Start the process by shutting down your Google Pixel – be careful and don’t reboot your phone, just switch it off completely.
  2. Now press and hold the Volume Down button for about two seconds.
  3. While still holding this button also press the Power key once – then release.
  4. From the menu that will be displayed on your Google Pixel highlight the Recovery option and confirm by pressing the Power key once.
  5. When the Android Logo is displayed press and hold the Power key for a couple of seconds.
  6. While holding the Power button press and release the Volume Up button.
  7. That should be all; the recovery mode will be displayed on your phone.
  8. Use the Volume Up and Down buttons in order to scroll up and down and the Power button to select your options – by going back to Android mode select “Reboot system now”.

Method 2

If you cannot manage to bring the recovery mode on your Google Pixel by using the steps from above, you can try the following one instead.

In this situation a computer or a notebook will be required. There you have to flash your phone’s USB drivers and the Android SDK software. Thus, if your device is running on Windows you can use this Android SDK tutorial and if your device is powered by MAC OS X / Linux you can use this tutorial instead. One more thing: on your smartphone the USB Debugging option must be checked – you can find this option under “menu – settings – developer options”. If Developer Options can be accessed, before doing anything else go to “menu – settings – about phone” and tap several times, repeatedly, on Built Number until you become a developer. Next, follow:

  1. Power on your Google Pixel and also open your computer or notebook.
  2. Next, ensure an USB connection between your smartphone and your PC.
  3. Navigate towards the Android SDK folder. When done, open a cmd window.
  4. For launching Command Prompt: press and hold the Shift keyboard key while right clicking on any blank space.
  5. In the cmd window type: adb reboot recovery.
  6. That’s all. The recovery mode menu will be now automatically displayed on your Pixel.
  7. Enjoy.

Method 3

The last solution is the most intuitive one. It implies in using a dedicated app from Google Play. Do note that root access might be required on your phone if you want to use this process. Therefore, go to Google Play and download the Quick Boot software. Run this tool and just follow on screen prompts in order to go into recovery mode.

Good. You now know how to put your Google Pixel into recovery mode. Test all the methods from above and use the one that you prefer the most. Now, use wisely the recovery environment and be careful not to brick something while trying to customize, optimize and improve your Android experience.
