Acer kicked off its Mobile World Congress show by unveiling three new affordable Android smartphones. The new Acer lineup includes the Liquid Z-series and the Liquid Jade Z. The Liquid Z-series comprises of two smartphones – Z220 and the Z520.
The Liquid Jade Z is the highest-end offering of the three smartphones revealed today by Acer. Acer claims that Liquid Jade Z brings premium features and an award-winning design to the masses at a relatively affordable price point. The Liquid Jade Z is powered by a MediaTek 64-bit quad-core chipset and includes 4G LTE connectivity. It comes with a 5.0” 1280 x 720 HD IPS display with Gorilla Glass protection on top and what Acer calls a ‘Zero Air Gap Display’. At the back, there is a 13MP camera with an f1.8 aperture lens and Acer’s Bright Magic image processing technology. Acer’s Liquid Jade Z will appeal to the audiophiles as well with its 24-bit Hi-res audio support with HD speakers and DTS Studio Sound technology. Another major highlight of the smartphone is its light-weight body that comes in at just 110 grams. It runs on Android 5.0 Lollipop, as do the other two new smartphones announced today.
Moving on to the Acer Liquid Z520 now. It features a 5.0” display like the Liquid Jade Z but has a significantly lower WVGA 800 x 480 resolution with a pixel density of just 186PPI. The smartphone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 quad-core chipset and also includes 1 GB of RAM and 8GB of onboard storage. It has an 8MP camera at the back with LED flash and also includes a DTS Studio sound speaker on the back of the device.
The Acer Liquid Z220 is the least impressive of the three devices unveiled today and comes with a 4.0” WVGA display with a pixel density of 233PPI. It is powered by a less powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 1.2GHz dual-core chipset. There is 1GB of RAM available and 8GB of internal storage. It comes with a 5MP rear camera with a 89 degree wide-angle lens with LED flash and a 2MP front-facing camera for selfies.
Both the Liquid Z-series smartphones will include Acer’s new Quick Mode feature that includes 3 distinct profiles for different users and age groups. These include the Basic Mode, Easy Mode, and Standard Mode. The Basic Mode is meant for youngsters and only offers fixed call and text functions. Easy Mode offers additional access to quick messages, radio, weather, clock, and quick call contacts. Finally, the Standard Mode is for the advance users with all the functionality of Android.
The Liquid Z520 has been priced at 109 euros while the Z220 will be 89 euros. It will be the Z220 that will launch earlier, with sales set to begin this month. The Liquid Z520 will be going on sale in April. The more expensive Liquid Jade Z has been priced at 199 euros and will be available this month onwards.
